At present Mother's day is celebrated all over the globe. Mother is a global character which is honoured and respected all over the world. Mother is the symbol of love affection.
Mother's day is celebrated across the world. In more than 46 countries, people honour mothers with a special day, but not all nations celebrate mother's day on the same day.
People in many ancient cultures celebrated holidays honouring motherhood, personified as a goddess. The very first celebrations in honour of mothers were held in Ancient Greece during the spring. They paid tribute to Rhea, The Mother of the Gods. Rhea was the Titan of "Earth and Fertility", both sister and wife to the Titan, Cronus (Saturn).
England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honoured the mothers of England.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honouring their mothers as well as the church.
In United States, Mother’s day was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe, writer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. She suggested that this day be dedicated to peace. Miss Howe organized Mother’s Day meetings in Boston every year.
In 1907, Miss Anna began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. She persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, W.Va., to celebrate Mother’s day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year, Mother’s Day was also celebrated in her own city of Philadelphia.
Now-a-days mother’s day is celebrated by almost all nations, and of course mothers are respected and honoured by all nations, religious and communities alike.
